Chapter XV
Tom Reconnoiters • learns the situation • reports at camp
SummaryTom swims across the water to Illinois, and stows away on a ferry back to St. Petersburg (Missouri), where he sneaks into his house. He then slides under a bed to listen to Aunt Polly, Sid, Marry, and Joe’s parent’s conversation. With the exception of Sid, they all talk about how much they miss the boys and wish they had been nicer to them. Tom also learns that a search crew has found their raft downstream, so everyone assumes that the boys capsized in midstream and drowned. After Joe’s parents left and Tom’s family falls asleep, Tom sneaks out of the house and almost leaves the letter for Aunt Polly, but decides against it. He then makes his way back to the island to tells the boys of his adventure.
