chapter XXXII
tom tells the story of their escape • tom's enemy in safe quarters •
About UsThe whole town was in prayer, some have given up, and Aunt Polly and Mrs. Thatcher have fallen into depression, without Tom and Becky. Finally, the town explodes with joy when the children are found and Tom tells the tale to all. While Tom was exploring the cave, he saw a little piece of sky just seconds before he gave up. He ran and got Becky and pulled her along, even though she said she was ready for death. They were found by some country folk, and learned they were five miles away from the main entrance to the cave. The farmers took them in and fed them before returning them home. After returning, the two children were bedridden for days (Becky more than Tom), and Tom also learned about Huck’s sickness. Tom visited him daily and would stop to see Becky too. During one visit he learned that the Judge had bolted the entrance to the cave and only he had the key. It was then that Tom told him Injun Joe was in the cave.

Analysis |
In this chapter Becky gives up and doesn't fight for her life, which makes her character seem like a quitter who can't take care of themselves. Also, in this chapter Tom seems to really care for Huck, bringing him closer into society.
