Chapter XXVI
The haunted house • sleepy ghosts • a box of gold • bitter luck
SummaryThe boy arrive back to the widow’s elm to retrieve their tools, but upon arriving there Tom realizes that it’s Friday and both boys knows that Friday is a very unlucky day. They then decide to just play that day and go treasure hunting tomorrow, so Tom teaches Huck how to play Robin Hood. On Saturday, they grab their tools and head up to the haunted house. When they arrive, they throw their tools in the corner to look around upstairs. While they were upstairs they hear the voices of two men entering. They learn that it’s Injun Joe and another man. They also learn that Injun Joe has been patrolling in disguise town scouting out his “revenge” plan. The men then pull out a bag of silver worth about six hundred dollars, and they proceed to insert into the ground for later. This makes the boys excitement grow because they would dig this up after the men had left. The two men now find the boy’s tools and use them to dig up the ground. As the two dig, they find thousands of dollars in gold, but Injun Joe realizes that the tools had fresh dirt of them, so they decide to take the money up to Injun Joe’s “Number Two” fort, in case someone comes back for their tools and sees the fresh dirt. Injun Joe then decides to head upstairs (where the boys are) to see if there is anyone up there, but he falls when the stairs break and decides to leave. When the boys finally get home they realize that Injun Joe’s “revenge” could be towards the boys, or just Tom, and they are filled with fear.
