Chapter X
The solemn oath • terror brings repentance • Mental Punishment
SummaryThe boys run into an abandoned tannery to discuss what they saw. Without the knowledge of Injun Joe’s plot against Potter, they make a blood pack to never tell anyone because of fear that Injun Joe will kill them if he wasn’t hung. Tom goes home and crawls into bed, not knowing that Sid is awake taking note of his disappearance. Sid tells Aunt Polly in the morning, causing her to lecture Tom about how he is breaking her heart. This causes Tom to feel depressed as he continues on to school. At school he receives the brass knob that he gave to Becky sending him deeper into his agony.

Analysis |
The boys turned back to their superstitions by making a blood oath because of a rational fear of Injun Joe and the thought that he will be put to justice without them. When Aunt Polly finds out he snuck out, their relationship is thrown even further into the dirt; as does Tom's mental state.

Questions to think about |
Will they break the blood oath if Muff Potter is blamed?
How, or will, Tom and Becky be able to repair their relationship? How will Tom get revenge on Sid for telling Aunt Polly? |
