Chapter XIV
Camp-life • A sensation • Tom steals away from camp
SummaryThe next day, the boys wake up to find the raft gone, making them feel content as their last connection to civilization was washed away. Huck finds a spring nearby and Joe and Tom catch a plentiful amount of fish for breakfast. After eating, the boys explore the island, and decide that the life of a pirate is great. Although, later in the afternoon, small traces of homesickness creep into the boys minds, but are disrupted when they see ships searching the water. They then realize the ship is looking for them, as many people have probably thought they’ve drowned. This makes the boys feel loved and not forgotten. After dinner, Joe hesitantly suggests going back, but Tom and Huck shoot him down. Although Tom shot down Joe, he leaves the island late at night after writing one note to put in Joe’s hat and one for his own pocket.
