Chapter IX
A solemn situation • Grave subjects introduced • Injun joe Explains
SummaryTom and Huck take the dead cat to the graveyard, where they hear the voices of Injun Joe, Muff Potter (the town drunk), and Dr. Robinson. The boys learn that Dr. Robinson paid Potter and Joe to dig up a body for him, when the three get it a fight. In this fight, Potter is knocked out, and Injun Joe stabs Dr. Robinson to pay back for driving him away from Dr. Robinson’s Father’s Kitchen and for being jailed by his father. The boys then flee out of fear before they hear Injun Joe convincing Potter that he is the murderer. After Potter runs off, Injun Joe saw that Potter’s knife was still in the corpse and walks away.

Who We Are |
This chapter introduces the main problem in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; Injun Joe. The murder of Dr. R is the first real problem that Tom has faced, so far, throwing him strait into adulthood and bringing him the biggest fear he has ever faced. Also, this chapter brings up a large topic that powers Injun Joe's rage; that is racial bias. As a "half-breed" (half Native-American and half white) Injun Joe is seen as a monster or to have tainted blood, and is treated very wrongly. Although this segregation is not good, he still is responsible for his own actions.

Our History |
How will not knowing about Injun Joe convincing Muff Potter about the murder effect the boys decisions/actions later in the book?
Who was the body they dug up? and why does Dr. Robinson want it? What are the boys going to do? |
