Chapter XXXIII
the fate of Injun Joe • Huck and tom compare notes • an expedition to the cave • protection against ghosts • "an awful snug place" • a reception at the Widow douglas's
SummaryThe news spread through the town that Injun Joe was still in the cave. So, everybody rushed up to find a dead Injun Joe and the mouth of the cave, his body suffered from hunger. Tom realized Injun Joe had tried to break through the cave door, but could not. Tom also noticed that there was a slightly hollowed stone that Injun Joe used to catch droplets of water as they fell. The town begged for his pardon after Injun Joe’s painful death, and the town held an enormous funeral for him. After the funeral, Tom and Huck talked about the treasure and Huck’s experience while following the convict. Tom came to a conclusion that the treasure was in the cave, so the boys raced to the small opening that Tom and Becky had escaped from. The boys decided to later create a small group of boys (Tom, Huck, Joe, and Ben) and become robbers together. When, they went to the place where Tom saw Injun Joe, they found a cross and started looking in the hill underneath the rock where the crosswas. Finally, after finding no treasure, the boys looked directly under the rock and found a small passageway that lead to the treasure. They lugged the treasure back using a stolen cart and ran into the Welshman who led them to the widow’s house. At the widow’s house they were given new suits and told to freshen up because most of the town was waiting for them.
