Mental Acrobatics • attending Sunday school • the superintendent • showing off • a private entrance
SummaryOn Sunday morning, during family worship, Tom struggles over his lines, with the help of his cousin, Mary. He practically gives up, but Mary changes his mind by tempting him with a special gift of a Barlow knife. After a struggle to get dressed (with help of Mary), Tom, Mary and Sid head to Sunday school, where Tom trades his winnings from the whitewashing in exchange for tickets, used to receive a new Bible and the glory that came with it. During Sunday school, lawyer Thatcher, Judge Thatcher, his wife and daughter (mysterious girl that he saw many nights ago) entered. Tom continued in his act of “showing off” which included receiving his new Bible. After receiving his new Bible, he was asked by Judge Thatcher who the first two disciples appointed, which he answered, “DAVID AND GOLAITH!” making a bad impression on the Judge.

Analysis |
This chapter showed a little bit into Mary's influence on Tom as she helps him through the Sunday morning routine, and even convinces him to not give up on his bible studies. One of the themes in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer also is present in chapter four. This theme is nothing good can come from manipulation, and when Tom uses manipulation to but the bible tickets, and even where he got the merchandise to trade for those tickets, he gets badly embarrassed (as well embarrasses the pastor.

Questions to think about |
Will Tom's bad impression on the Judge cause conflict between him and Becky Thatcher?
Do you think Tom will now pay more attention in Sunday School? Do you think that Tom regrets trading his winnings, or even receiving those winnings from "whitewashing?" |
