SummaryThe story starts of with Aunt Polly looking for Tom because he has been eating jam from the kitchen. He tricks Aunt Polly and gets away. This causes Aunt Polly to reflect on Tom's mischievous ways and how she is not strict enough with him. She then decides to punish him more frequently.
That afternoon, as Aunt Polly suspected, Tom plays hooky and goes swimming instead of school, causing Aunt Polly to try and trick the truth out of him. Tom is able to dodge her questioning, but is exposed by Sid, his younger brother, and slips out of the house before he can be punished. After escaping his house, Tom heads into town where he runs into a new city boy. The two boys get into a fight and Tom wins chasing the boy back to his house. The boys mother then proceeds to call Tom a "bad vicious, vulgar child", and tell him to leave. Tom then heads home, where his aunt sees, his dirty and ripped clothes. The chapter ends with Aunt Polly taking away Tom's Saturday, forcing him to do chores |
