SummaryHuck goes back to the Welshman’s and is welcomed in. Huck then learns about how the old man and his sons chased Injun Joe and his companion away. Huck, trying hard not to reveal the treasure, tells about how he followed the men and heard them talking. Then, by accident, he ends up telling that the deaf and mute Spaniard is actually Injun Joe. Huck also learns that the box they carried were just robber’s tools and the treasure could still be in the tavern room.
During church Mrs. Harper, Mrs. Thatcher, and Aunt Polly figure out that Tom and Becky are missing and it spreads through the town. The robber fiasco is forgotten and most of the town search for them in the cave. They search parties only find the words Becky and Tom written on a wall, in candle soot, and Becky’s bow. The whole town is in hysterics. Huck falls ill with fever and is taken care of by the widow, who still doesn’t know that Huck saved her. While ill, Huck learns that they found the liquor in the tavern, but no treasure. Though he still doesn’t know Tom is missing. |
